OK, in all honesty, this kit is only slightly removed from "toy" status. There are only a handful of pieces, and the detail is virtually non-existent. On the one hand, it's disappointing, but on the other hand, it IS based on an aircraft from an animated show from the late 70's. No doubt geared towards younger children, the assembly of this kit is very straight-forward an requires only the smallest amount of glue and paint. The giant arrow shaped decals of yellow and black were obviously intended to minimize the need for painting. The pilot figures are molded into the cockpit. There is nothing below waist level. What there is of them is essentially a rounded helmet atop a pair of narrow shoulders. According to my reference, the Black Tiger was a single man fighter as well. Landing gear detail is also simplified. The gun ports amount to shallow notches in the plastic. Though the fuselage is essentially correct in shape, the canopy is wrong. The casting is on par for such an older kit. Detail is soft. The pieces glue together in proper alignment. The forward and rear fuselage parts slide together tightly, but the rear join is taller than the forward side and must be sanded down to create a smooth surface both on the top and bottom of the craft. The black parts are completely opaque, though the yellow is translucent. To assure consistency in color, the kit will need an under coat or primer coat. |
