Heinkel 111

The Heinkel 111 was an aircraft supposedly designed as an airliner, but upon the outbreak of hostilities during WWII it was quickly converted to use as a medium bomber and troop transport. This Monogram kit in 1/48 scale was, I think, the first of it's kind. I bought it because it was in scale with the other fighters I'd been building, and because it got a favorable review in Fine Scale Modeler. I didn't have any difficulties constructing the kit -- considering the size of some of the pieces, the lack of warped parts was a joy. The forward fuselage/canopy is molded in a solid piece of clear plastic, which facilitates painting of the canopy frames (of which there are many, many, many).

I painted the Heinkel in a splinter camoflage pattern, and chose to model the maritime torpedo-armed version. The decals are big, but settle down nicely with the application of a mild setting solution. Missing from the sheet, however, were the swastikas present on most Luftwaffe aircraft of the period. This omission was not a mistake on the part of the manufacturer. Apparently, there are laws in several countries, particularly in Europe, which prohibit the use of the swastika in printed media. There are aftermarket decal sheets available in most scales, however.
