This is the Lunar Model's Discovery from 2001 A Space Odyssey. It was the first resin kit I ever built, and I think it was back when the kit was originally released. I remember having to go to the post office to pick it up and bring it home. The memory involves a long walk, so it was prior to my getting a driver's license, which means I was still in high school. So, doing the math, it means I built this fella about 16 years ago.
The kit cost about $110, which was a princely sum for somebody working part time at a library for $4 an hour. The resin stank to high heaven, and the casting was of mixed quality. Odds are the pieces weren't pressure cast, since there were a ton of micro-bubbles and voids near sharp corners. The spinal pieces were particularly scary. The command module and engine module, however, were well done and highly detailed. I remember doing a lot of drilling to get the spinal connectors to fit, and I probably killed off a few thousand brain cells from the resin dust. The least accurate parts, so far as I can tell after these many years, would have to be the engine bells and main connecting point to the spine, just aft of the command module.
I spray painted the kit white, and added a few touches of gray, followed by black on the engine "grilles". I'd like to revisit this kit someday, but it won't be any time soon.
